Needed a portable vise for wooden ship building. Good add-ons also. Also, hefty enough that for lightweight items you don't even need to make it adhere to anything. I was reassured when I saw that you can get a replacement suction apparatus.Great Vise for modeler's w/o space.
It's VERY solid. It seems to be made of cast aluminium except for the screws, guide rods and shaft which are plated steel. The head opens to 2.5" max (the screw will only have 1-2 threads engaged), and it comes with smooth nylon jaws but there are several types available. There are several heads and bases that can be interchanged for different needs. The rubber base holds very strongly and the manufacturer sells a spare rubber shoe and lever as a kit. As you can see in the pictures I took, the base can be fully disassembled.Mind you, this is not the kind of vise you'll find bolted to a metalworking bench, but it is a much stronger alternative to "helping hands". In all, it's superb for everything from soldering and small crafts to light drilling.
I use this on my desk to hold the Panavise circuit board holder and it is virtually unmovable once you have it suctioned down to the desk. It's a little tricky to get it to suction down until you get used to it then it works great.
I bought this vise for Ham Radio Hobby use. I use it to hold cables and connectors for soldering. It worked perfectly for what I needed it for. The vise is well built, solid, and worked flawlessly. The head with the jaws will tilt and rotate so you can get an ideal position for whatever it is you want to be held in place. The vacuum base works great as well, although I don't always need to use that feature because the vise is heavy enough to stay put without the vacuum. I think it is a great product and I would say buy one without hesitation.
In my current setup I am not able to permanently mount a base. The Vacuum base works great in this situation. My table is a painted wood with a very smooth surface. On this structure the base is rock solid without causing any damage to the paint's finish. In the past I have tried to use this same base on plastic table tops but could not. The texture of that style table top would not allow a good suction.Currently, I use this base in conjuction with a PanaVise 315 Circuit Board Holder. Love my setup.
I ordered this vise for our test bench at work. I loved it so much I bought another one for my home. It's just the perfect tool for what it is. It's solidly built, finely adjustable, tough yet delicate. The vacuum base works great on Formica/laminate surfaces. If you don't have a smooth surface to cup this to, get one of the other variants with a different base. If it isn't suctioned down its a tad wobbly as it becomes top heavy with work clamped into it.The nylon padded jaws work great. Hard enough to get a good grip, soft enough not to mar most things. Not too big, not too small. Don't waste your time trying to save a penny. There is a reason why this company has been making this thing, unchanged, for decades. IT IS THE BEST. I use mine nearly everyday and it works as good now as the day I bought it. If something happened to mine, I would order the exact same thing the same day to replace it.I've used mine for small repairs, electronics, soldering, woodworking, RC Cars/Planes/Boats, static display models, rotating paint stand for airbrushing stuff. ENDLESS USES!You won't regret purchasing it.I also have the self centering wide mouth jaws... A major PLUS to have in your arsenal. I picked up the electronics board holder... I don't use it much but it works well if you have a loose board your working on.
I'm very happy with this vise. I has great grip on smooth surfaces. I have yet to see if it will hold on to a rough surface like plywood. It has very good weight to it and is easy to move and lock into position. Great for indoor projects!!!
