EMERGENCY SUMP PUMP (Glentronics BWE) Reviews
This is the cheapest of a series of emergency 12v pumps from Basement Watchdog. Works as advertised.Note pump does not include the deep discharge (DD) battery, buy it separately. Important: although it looks and acts like your normal 12v automotive battery, a DD battery is made differently. A car battery would probably work fine - but maybe only once! So spring for the DD model. (also known as a marine battery.)Installation was straight-forward and it's worked fine in ~2 years of use. We've had power outages a half dozen times, longest was ~12 hours so the claimed 48 hours of use has not been tested. One complaint: when the power goes off, the pump alarm goes off and can *not* be turned off! Sounds like a whawling love-sick cat. :-( If your power goes off frequently, buy the next model up - otherwise expect all the cats in the neighborhood to come visiting.
I've had this pump for several years, with no problems. It was installed professional, however I've read the instructions and installation seems pretty straight-forward. I had the problem that the other review had - the alarm will not turn off while it's pumping (more on that below). A couple weeks ago we had a lot of rain, resulting in a lot of water in our sump pit. Out of curiosity I unplugged the main pump and watched this pump work for about 30 minutes. The float for this pump was about 6 inches higher than our regular pump, so this pump only went off every 5 minutes or so (as opposed to every 30 seconds for our Zoeller pump). That makes a lot of sense to me - you don't need a battery backup keeping the pit empty, but pumping when the water gets too high. The pump performed admirably, with the exception that the alarm would not turn off every time the pump activated. After that I contacted Glentronics, who agreed to fix the controller under warrantee (I explained that it was several years old). I just received the controller back - under one week between my shipping it to them and them returning it! They reported that it tested out fine so I'm guessing this is normal behavior, just not as documented in their instructions. Bottom line, I highly recommend this pump because it works as expected, pumps a good amount of water, is relatively inexpensive, and gives you great peace of mind!
We bought our first Basement Watchdog after coming home to floating carpet in our finished basement when a sump pump float switch failed. Thereafter, it got us through several days of a power outage after a weak hurricane came through and dumped a lot of rain on our area. Things I like about this product:- It's cheaper than a generator, and it doesn't have to be started.- If the power outage goes on for too long, there's always another battery out in my car.- It protects against power outages AND bad sump pumps and switches.- When I called technical support with a question yesterday at 5 p.m. EDT, a knowledgeable representative answered in less than a minute. (My only complaint was that I had a little difficulty understanding his Chicago accent.)- The newer model includes a switch to turn off the alarm when the pump is on battery and there's nothing we can do about it.I test it periodically with this procedure:1. Unplug the power.2. Measure and record the battery voltage.3. Make sure there's plenty of water in the sump and trip the float. Measure how far down the water goes.4. Measure and record the end battery voltage.5. Plug in the power again.Yes, I just replaced the unit after only 12 years of rare use, but it cost one-tenth as much as replacing the carpet, not to mention all the other stuff we had to throw out in 1999.
I bought this the week before hurricane Irene hit Maryland. It was installed on 8/26 and was pumping water on 8/28. I used a marine battery, which was charged for about 8 hours. The pump worked like a charm for 6 hours, pumping an average of 5 times per hour. NO PROBLEMS. The alarm was easy to turn off. I think this is a low cost way to save your basement.
This thing saved my rear AGAIN. After our first 100 year flood a year ago I installed this when my sump pump gave out and filled my finished basement with 4in of water. Since then I've had another main pump failure (my fault for only replacing the float switch on a 7 year old pump) and a handful of power failures. All of which were handled flawlessly by this pump. I finally decided to write the review after hurricane Irene dumped almost 9in of water on us in a day. After a power failure this pump ran almost continuously for a number of hours, and managed to keep up with some pretty impressive rains. OBTW I used a deep-cycle battery from Walmart, works great.
